Be Part of Art

Art in Island is a 3D art museum in Cubao, Quezon City where you can touch the art and pose with it as much as you like. There is no time limit except their 9:30pm closing time and you can take as many pictures as you can manage. On our last visit, we spent around three hours, took almost 300 photos, and ended up absolutely exhausted. Maybe we're just not athletic people (I'm a hermit, after all), but my mom and her friends definitely had fun anyway, if their pictures are anything to go by.

Getting there is rather tricky if you don't know the area. It's still fairly unknown so not all taxi drivers may know where it is. Don't fret, though. Art in Island is impossible to miss once you're on the right street because the building is very modern compared to its neighboring structures and there's a fairly spacious parking area in front.

It turns out it was actually within walking distance of Ali Mall, which is also around the area of Gateway Mall and Araneta Center, so we were able to get home just fine. The next time we went, we had private transportation thanks to my mom's friend.

That friend happens to be a mermaid.
Anyway, if you manage to find it, the entrance fee is PHP500 for adults and PHP400 for students, senior citizens and PWDs. Children under three feet get in for free. Admission is also free for birthday celebrants! You get in for free only if it's the day before, the day after, or the day of your birthday. Unfortunately, my birthday isn't until next week so I wasn't able to avail the promo. Don't forget to bring valid IDs to avail of discounts.

Don't let the admission fee scare you away. The place is actually bigger inside than it looks from the outside and since there's no time limit, you can spend the whole day rolling on the floor or jumping around until your legs start getting sore. There are so many possible ways to pose with each 3D art that we kept coming back to some to try different poses.

Shoes are not allowed inside. You can deposit your footwear at the shoe counter by the entrance and claim them later as you exit. Wear socks or bring bedroom slippers if you don't want to walk on the cold floor barefooted.

The whole building is fully air conditioned so if you get cold very easily like me, bring something to keep you warm. The first time I went I was wearing shorts and found that a light sweater was more than enough, while none of my companions seemed to have had any complaints about the cold.

Art in Island recognizes that finding the right angle to take pictures from can be a challenge, so they put markers where you should stand. Watch out for little stickers on the floor with a camera icon that says "photo point", face the direction that the arrow is pointing to, and take the picture from there.

Some of the art requires getting crazy on the floor to get really nice effects. Jump shots would have been cool, but of course your companions would have to be willing and able to do a little gymnastics for you. Depending on who you're taking pictures for, you might need to do a little directing too.

They also have a small cafe by the exit where you can buy food and drinks if you get hungry and thirsty, which you definitely will if you spend hours inside the place! Their food selection is very limited though, so you may want to just head to the nearby malls instead.

All in all, it was a fun experience and something I definitely recommend. The smiles on my companions' faces are well worth the muscle pain I'm currently experiencing because of all that physical activity. Now that it's summer and school is out, expect the place to get a little crowded!
